The Universal Credits Reforms Nightmare and Thanet's Food Bank Urgency For Donations

As we highlighted in last week's newsletter, Thanet has been hit with the full enrollment of Universal Credits, the new reform for JSA since July 19th.

From the date a claim for this benefit is made, their is a 6 week delay before you receive your first payment.

This is an ongoing monthly payment rather than fortnightly as claimants have always been paid until employed and which includes your housing benefit allowance that is made the claimants responsibility to make sure the rent due is set aside from living expenses.

Thanet Food Bank August 2017 Newsletter

This is our first newsletter, bringing you updates on our services, raising awareness of the services we are seeing greater needs of, fundraising events and how you can help us to help others

We have seen the demand for our services in Thanet, more so food bank assistance, housing and homelessness support, advice and/or advocacy among other services we provide, hit an all time high, in turn unexpectedly raising our costs which we are fighting to meet while keeping food bank stocked for the demand along with the essential supplies for our rough sleeper packages and of course the rent and bills along with all other running costs to keep our services running and meet that demand.

Universal Credits Explained

What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is a new benefit for people of working age.
It is paid both to people who are out of work and to those in employment.
It is replacing most of the current means-tested benefits (Job Seekers Allowance) for people of working age over a period of many months, full enrolled to Thanet postcodes from July 19th

From July 19th for new claimants in Thanet, it will not be possible for people to make a new claim for;
- Working tax credit
- Child tax credit
- Housing benefit

New Year UK Floods - Kent Aid #ukfloods

To all those affected by the UK floods.

On behalf of all of us at Thanet's Families in Need Community Support Services, can I send positive thoughts to all of you affected by these awful floods.

We helped in the 2013 floods, becoming a drop off point with a volunteer convoy distributing donations to the worse affected in southern regions and as this weather worsens have been approached from in and around the area about being a hub for aid to those affected by the most rainfall and flooding we have seen in decades.

Garden Makeover project with our summer NCS fundraising team

A couple of weeks ago, on August 4th we posted a blog inviting you all to nominate either yourself or someone you know who you think deserves a home makeover as apart of and to finalise the 4 weeks of the

"As part of our raising money for our Thanet's Families in Need, we wished to do something practical, and to be involved more with Thanet's Families in Need"

With less than 24 hours notice to get your nominations in, we still had a good response to the blog

Nominate a loved one for a home or garden makeover

We have an extremely exciting week or so ahead with the NCS programme.

We are very honoured to have a group dedicate their time this summer to fundraisng towards our September target of £2000 to help with vital running costs, relocation and the possibility of a mobile unit ready for the next seasons soup kitchen.

As part of their work volunteering they will also be spending a week helping hands on with practical work.

These guys have been offered the resources to help with their practical work which essentially is looking at improving the life's of those in hardship by means of a much needed make over.

Budget 2015 Pre Analysis Fighting Austerity in Thanet

At 12.30pm today, George Osbourne will be delivering the new government's budget.

This means ever so much to us here having correctly predicted the effects of what the last cuts would do to us here in Thanet on BBC South East Today in April 2013 and the promise to slash a further £12 billion in welfare with the potential to hit the most vulnerable, ie, children, disabled, over 65's and those suffering already we want to be ready for what the next set of cuts will bring as we prepare to hit our 4th winter fighting austerity in Thanet whilst being there to assist those in need 7 days a week.

Tax credits threat - Our views

Threats to the tax credits system

Off the back of David Cameron’s speech on Monday and his promise to end what he called the "ridiculous merry-go-round" of taxing low earners then handing them money back in benefits we were invited back onto BBC Radio Kent to hear how we think this could affect the country and Thanet.

It came amid a debate over plans for £12bn in welfare cuts, the details of which have not been revealed.

Seeing the government cover up unemployment figures with families living of low wage, zero hour contracts, self employed ect before the election, we have seen a huge increase in working families needing assistance.

Thanet Food Bank Donations Wishlist

Thanet Food Bank Needs Your Help

Thanet's Families in Need Community Support Service set up a food bank for those in Thanet needing food donations originally in December 2012 when we done our first New years soup kitchen which became one of the services at the forefront of our organisation from April 2013 more so due to welfare reforms and cuts throughout leaving many more in server hardship not only for those on benefits but also those in employment facing unforeseen circumstances and hardship in Thanet.

Information for Victims of Crime - Kent Police

I have received an email today at Thanet's Families in Need Kent Police regarding a new service called Track My Crime.

TrackMyCrime is an online service for victims of crime.

In the past victims in Thanet have had to wait for the police officer investigating their crime to contact them with updates.
Often this could be at times that weren’t convenient to them.

TrackMyCrime will send your information to the website as soon as it’s inputted into the police computer system and you will be automatically alerted to updates on your case via an email notification.
