THANET'S FAMILIES IN NEED - Housing & Homelessness Support
 -

With more rough sleepers being seen in our towns around Thanet, homeless  that are sofa surfing, families in emergency accommodation that are being placed all over Kent with Thanet emergency accommodations full to the brim leaving the council no option other than to place families deemed priority need when presenting as homeless into shelter out of the area, as far as Dover and Medway.
With huge rises in threats of evictions, as predicted due to the spring's benefit cap and July's full enrolment of Universal Credits, our housing services at Thanet's Families in Need Community Support Service and Food Bank has become one of our biggest areas of support along with food bank.

We help with a variation of housing issues and appeals.
We assist tenants with sustaining their tenancies in Thanet where possible, weather that be an existing or new tenancy,we help settle clients into new tenancies including furnishing premises where required or we are there for your general housing matters, just a phone call away for a spot of advice or guidance.

We attend call outs in and around Thanet with packages of essentials including sleeping bags, clothing, blankets, towels, toiletries and food with advice, support and referrals where required.

We will be out doing our day time outreach to the known spots of our rough sleepers in Thanet twice a week always stocked with essential supplies for those who need it, warm soup, hot drinks and snacks with our  soup kitchen back in September - March..

We have built strong relationships with many clients over the years, with this last couple of years through the worst we have seen for the rise in homelessness as we go into our 6th winter, as we predicted during the April 2013 BBC feature in reaction to the budget and welfare reform announcement.

What is ever so rewarding is seeing the clients who come out of the other end with a happy story to tell, weather it be they have kicked an addiction, in a relationship, now have a job, car and rent their own place or are simply sustaining a tenancy after taking support from the network agencies relevant for their case.

  • Housing and Homelessness in Thanet

With the massive shortage in social housing many are being forced to go into private rental.
This can be very difficult for many with the deposit and rent in advance.

The council offers a discretionary payment that can cover this and assure your deposit.

This can be a lifeline to those homeless or facing homelessness too.

This Scheme is designed to help people at risk of becoming homeless, or already homeless, and there are other conditions that apply.
If you can find private rented property yourself, but haven’t got a cash deposit ready, the council could be able to help.
They can give you advice about a new tenancy and in some cases assist by providing the discretionary housing payment.

How do I find out if I can be considered for a discretionary housing payment?

Contact the Housing Options Team on 01843 577277 or visit Thanet Gateway, Cecil Street, Margate

    Thanet Winter Shelter Scheme 2016/17

After a year of campaigning for more emergency accommodation for the homeless, we were over the moon to hear confirmation from Thanet District Council that they had brought together this amazing scheme we are delighted to be apart of.
The winter shelters, currently held alternately in 7 different churches, funded by a council, supported by Aspire along with another doner and ran by Ian Buckland from the Salvation Army began on the 1st December 2016 and run until the 28th February.
We have been helping by collecting bedding for the opening, providing clothing and new shoes/trainers when required as well as the normal soup kitchen and food bank services available with us and are proud to say currently have 3 of our team also sharing their time volunteering at the shelters too including 2 supervisors, offering as much support to such a fantastic scheme as we can personally and as an organisation.
