Raising Smiles for Christmas in Thanet 2015

The official figure for 2015 smiles raised this Christmas in Thanet is just astonishing!
Together we raised 453 smiles in Thanet through the Raising Smiles for Christmas Campaign 2015, our 4th in a row, giving food and gift hampers, baby boxes filled with essentials, shoe boxes of gifts and food, gifts to children in the Rainbow Ward, the homeless and those in temporary accommodation as well as clients we have no nominated and your nominations too

In 2014 we handed out 280 gifts and hampers, more than double than the previous years total.

We were named 'The Gap Fillers' firstly by a cabinet member off KCC and also by the KCC's, KSAS commissioner in summer 2013 during a meeting to air concern from our Committee Chair and Vice Chair, points of view regarding the reforms and the multi million pound funded KSAS and its major flaws, with claims for urgent assistance for food and/or fuel taking an average of 14 - 21 days to get a response at that time. Figures they gave us showed we were helping more people in Thanet a day and the majority within 24 hours of asking for assistance, especially for food, clothing and even household goods in that time frame.

Working with the advice and support from the Charity Commission to become a registered charity as hoped for by now with the delay of needing to reach and produce an annual income of at least £5000 in fundraising and donations.

This has not been a priority with the services and needs of the people of Thanet at the forefront with demand  ever growing.
Over the last 6 months, our team has grown and with that comes some wonderful people including our fundraising and events team who raised well over £700 on their first event!

We were until the 18th December, partners in an exciting pilot scheme by East Kent Housing to support people moving into universal credit and also help with debt/money management, benefits and housing advice, helping with CV's, job applications ect
Disability Support, Food Bank and donations of essential items, sign posting to multi agencies we use, along with Turning Point and Step Up attending the hub on separate themed weeks.

We are now working with multi agencies including TDC for relocation but also pressing forward with what the committee has been trying to highlight for well over 2 years with our last 2 previous council leaders and this community networking.
We really want to emphasise how, with better local community networking we can bring a better service for both service providers and service users.

By having a community facility it will enable not only us but other clubs, groups, organisations and charities we have seen either face huge cuts to any funding the did receive or not be able to afford the rent, as we saw today through a mother a toddler group that closed down, donating all their items to us.
In turn, it would be wonderful to b able to offer this group at a community facility.

Homelessness in Thanet

On Tuesday the 30th of December 2014 we held yet another New Year's soup kitchen with thanks to the Eclective Palace giving us the space in their market to hold it allowing us to serve soups, hot drinks, biscuits and also a free clothing rail for those in need of a warm meal with the option of a friendly ear to just talk to or get some support and advice.

After listening to the public and collaborating with the Eclective Palace we have made this into a fortnightly event which also had a transportation system in place to get people in need of this service to us from parts of Thanet where they couldn't reach us throughout the cold months until the market sadly closed.

We are hoping to announce this years Thanet Soup Kitchen very soon!

We run a rapid response service to rough sleepers and the homeless in Thanet with packages of essentials including a new sleeping bag, blanket, clothing, hat, socks, oil blanket, waterproof poncho, wet wipes and toiletries along with food with support and referrals if required to other agencies.
